If we speak about the content, there are three things : Magnesium, calcium, Alkalinity.
Calcium is very important because the invertebrates and corals have their hard body made of rich calcium content and the supply comes from water. The ideal recommended Calcium content is 400ppm. Alkalinity is relative acidity of water or related to pH of the water. Normal potable water is neither acidic or alkaline, but water with salt is bound be alkaline and this is essential because the bicarbonate is another important component for good growth of corals. The best condition is to have 8-11dkh. Magnesium is among the most abundant of the trace minerals in salt water. This works with calcium and alkalinity to create a perfect balance of Salt water in Marine aquarium. The best range is 1250-1400ppm
